Samsung SDS to apply blockchain tech to marine logistics

Samsung’s IT arm contracts with ABN Amro, Port of Rotterdam Authority

Samsung SDS will apply blockchain technology to its marine logistics business that covers Asia and Europe in cooperation with ABN Amro, one of Holland’s three major banks.

Samsung SDS, headed by Hong Won-pyo, said Sunday that it had signed a contract for the blockchain-based marine logistics business with ABN Amro and Port of Rotterdam Authority. Samsung SDS said it would complete a pilot project to connect its blockchain platform Nexledger to ABN Amro’s blockchain platform Corda by February next year.

The pilot project envisions applying blockchain technology to freight that departs from Asia for Rotterdam. It focuses on verifying if different platforms can be compatible. If the pilot project comes to a successful close, it will be possible to simplify financial transactions such as confirmation of export and import bills, share trade-related documents in real time and block document forgery and falsification.

Samsung SDS, ABN Amro and Port of Rotterdam Authority have plans to expand their blockchain-powered project to foreign institutions and freight owners and broaden connections with other companies’ blockchain platforms.

Samsung SDS says its platform Nexledger has proved innovative and stable in the course of pushing for a marine logistics blockchain consortium participated in by Korea’s 38 private, public ad academic entities last year. Samsung SDS Vice President for Logistics Kim Hyung-tae said, “The signing has been made possible as Europe shows keen interest in marine logistics blockchain projects in Korea. This will serve as an occasion to boost competitiveness in logistics and globalize our blockchain platform business.”

Meanwhile, Samsung SDS unveiled seven blockchain patents it filed from August to October last year through the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) on Oct. 15. The patents are related to blockchain-based data processing, digital asset transactions and digital identity.
